Dystopia

Ahh Dystopia. Another one of those great bands who toiled away forever in obscurity before releasing a proper album. This here is that album, the one and only full length by that crust/sludge band from Oakland. A great album full of harsh, uncompromising brutality. Dystopia reminds us all of the shit state the world is in, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Two drummers. Most bands can't pull this off, but Kylesa manages to build a stacking rhythm into a massive cacophony of percussion forcing explosive riffs and rough vocals right down your throat. The perfect antidote to boring music. A nice, tight album from some Georgia facewreckers in the vein of Baroness and early Mastodon.

One of my newest musical discoveries here. Earthride is like taking Lemmy, putting him on vocals in Saint Vitus, and along with Dave Chandler have Bob Balch from Fu Manchu as well. Downtuned, heavy, stoned out, dark...all of these are adequate descriptions. This music has a great 70's biker feel to it on top of the heavyness. Seriously, try this shit.

Take a psychedelic bassline, a basic jazzy drumline, add some slowly evolving guitar work, and repeat it over and over. This is the basic formula for Pharaoh Overlord. It's the kind of music that can be put on in the background and you wouldn't notice it, but you can also intently listen and find many beautiful subtle details. A great piece of music.

I'm pretty sure most of the people who come here have heard of Fu Manchu. While King of the Road is usually touted as their best album, this one definitely gives it some competition. The production is very tough and gritty which fits the album perfectly. Give it a try, it'll become a favorite.

A Little Bliss Forever....

White Hills...now this band is really out there. Their songs represent for me the apex that one can achieve with psychedelic rock. Ranging from short, Stooges style fuzzed out songs to longer, winding, droning psychedelic freak-outs. I highly suggest you not only give these guys a chance, but buy their music, go to a show, buy a t-shirt. Such material of this quality does not come by often, and we should cherish it as much as we can.

And here we haven an album by the British band Loop. It's a mix of drone, space rock, and shoegaze. The songs are incredibly trippy, usually revolving around single chord drones mixed with some psychedelic guitar playing. A simultaneously depressing and uplifting.

Children in Time, rejoice: Hammond-soaked and riff-packed, Italy's Wicked Minds sounds like a hopped-up combination of Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. This album sounds like it came directly out of the early seventies, which in my book is a good thing. Give it a shot, it's more than worth it.
